Mentioned Isn't Recommended: How AI Search Decides Which Insurance Brands Win

3 min read

Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity who the best independent insurance agency in your town is, then look at what comes back. National carriers and comparison sites, probably not the agency down the street. Being known is not the same as being chosen.

What the models return

Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity one question: "Who's the best independent insurance agency in your town?" Then look at what comes back.

National carriers. Comparison sites. Directory listings. Probably not the agency down the street that has insured half the town for forty years.

The benchmark

There's a benchmark that explains how this works. Brainpan.AI measured how AI engines treat insurance brands. The Hartford appears in the top three answers 88.1% of the time, but the models actively recommend it in only 27.6% of them. Amica's AI visibility in home insurance runs 10.8 times its actual market share.

Being known is not the same as being chosen. The gap between mentioned and recommended is where the next round of insurance distribution is being decided.

The big carriers measure this

The big carriers measure this. They have teams watching it. And those same engines are answering "best independent insurance agency in your town" every day. When was the last time you checked whether your name shows up at all?

The big carriers are fighting over being recommended. Most local agents and regional mutuals aren't even getting mentioned, and you don't have to be a giant to change that. The answers are built from things you partly control.

Where I'd start

  • 1.Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini the exact questions your buyers ask, your town and your lines. Screenshot everything.
  • 2.Check whether you appear at all. Don't compare yourself to national brands. Compare yourself to the local shop that competes with you.
  • 3.Find out which sources the models read, including Google reviews, directories, and your own website, and fix what you control.
  • 4.Re-run the same questions monthly. If the answers move when you fix your sources, you've found a channel most of your competitors haven't touched.

I spent years watching distribution numbers at GEICO. The metrics were always there. Now there's a new one on the board.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How can an independent insurance agency start using AI?

Start with one frontline workflow losing time, such as quote preparation, renewal follow-up, or routine service requests. Map how the work is done today, decide which steps need human judgment, and apply AI to the repetitive steps first.

How do I check whether AI engines mention my agency?

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini the exact questions your buyers ask, your town and your lines. Screenshot the answers. If your name doesn't appear, fix the sources the models read: your website, your Google reviews, and the directories that list you. Re-run monthly.
